A home on the cliff

Perched on the rugged cliffs of Sydney’s northern beaches stands a unique residence, entirely shaped by its natural surroundings. High above the ocean, the house is designed as a robust yet understated structure where architecture and landscape seamlessly merge. The zinc roof plays a crucial role in this, serving both as shelter and as a sculptural element within the landscape.

Design and Material Use
The choice of materials is deliberately restrained and sustainable, suited to the challenging coastal conditions, says architect Kelvin Ho of Akin Atelier. “The Sydney sandstone base gives the house a sense of solidity and lasting anchorage in the rocky environment. Above that, timber cladding adds warmth to the façade. But the most defining element is the zinc roof, which not only provides protection but also adds a sculptural quality to the landscape. The natural patina and subdued tones of zinc blend effortlessly with the hues of rock, sand and sea.”

Visually Subtle
The roof unfolds as a clean and crisp profile over the home. Thanks to the flexibility of zinc, the design could be executed with long panels and sharp detailing. “This precision results in a roofing system that is both technically refined and visually understated, fully aligned with the architectural language of simplicity and restraint,” says Kelvin Ho. The zinc roof rests on a stable structure of
steel and timber trusses. “These withstand the high wind loads of the location and enabled the careful installation of the zinc panels by The Copper & Zinc Roofing Company. The detailing focuses on continuity: seams and joints are minimized to ensure optimal protection and a clean, linear aesthetic.”

NedZink NATUREL
The choice for zinc, according to Kelvin Ho, stems from both performance and sustainability. “The material withstands salty sea air and strong coastal winds, requires little maintenance, and has an exceptionally long lifespan. Moreover, zinc is fully recyclable, making it an environmentally friendly option. These qualities can last for generations and respects its surroundings.”
The architect specifically chose NedZink NATUREL for its uncoated, pure appearance. “Over time, this material develops a natural patina that, in a coastal climate, gains an increasingly rich and expressive character. The aging process turns the roof into a living part of the design, reflecting the changing moods of the landscape.”

The final result is a roof that does not dominate but rather blends into its surroundings, the architect summarizes powerfully. “Depending on the light, its appearance subtly shifts: silver-grey in the morning, warm and softened in the evening. This creates an architecture that feels timeless and authentic, rooted in the cliff and inseparably connected to nature.”
